A finely decorated Caucasian kindjal dagger with a straight double-edged steel blade and richly ornamented hilt and scabbard.
The hilt and scabbard are decorated with silver mounts with floral motifs in both niello and engraving techniques in style which is common for the works of the Daghestanian silversmiths, niello-style floral ornament, gilded relief details and finely worked beaded borders. The decoration combines scrolling foliage, geometric panels and traditional Caucasian ornamental motifs. The blade has a central fuller and shows age-related patina, oxidation and surface marks.
The inscription reads: “Work of Haji Ali, year 1348.” The date 1348 AH corresponds to 1929–1930 in the Gregorian calendar. Although the inscription is written in Arabic script, this does not necessarily mean an Arab origin: Arabic script was widely used in the early 20th century in Dagestan and other parts of the North Caucasus. The exact region of manufacture is not confirmed.
