A Russian silver beer cup or small tankard, dated 1854.
The vessel is of slightly tapering scalloped form, raised on a shaped base and fitted with an elegant curved handle. The body is divided into vertical panels and engraved with ornamental cartouches, floral sprays and scrolling motifs. The interior retains gilding, creating a warm contrast with the silver exterior.
The underside is marked with the maker’s initials “A.M.”, the date 1854 and the Russian 84 zolotnik silver standard. The 84 zolotnik mark corresponds to high-grade Russian silver, approximately equivalent to 875/1000 silver. The maker and assay office should be confirmed by direct hallmark reference, as the city / assayer mark is not fully clear from the photographs.
Russian silver drinking vessels of the mid-19th century were often made with shaped lobed bodies, engraved decoration and gilt interiors, combining practical table use with decorative refinement.
