Description

A Russian silver-gilt tea glass holder in its fitted wooden presentation box, made by Grachev, St. Petersburg, dated 1892.

The set consists of a silver-gilt podstakannik, original glass liner, matching spoon and fitted wooden case lined with blue velvet and silk. The interior of the lid bears an engraved presentation plaque with a monogram and the inscription: “In remembrance of the Confirmation, Feb. 21st 1893.” The silk lining is stamped in Cyrillic “Грачевъ, С. Петербургъ” / Grachev, St. Petersburg.

The glass holder is of cylindrical form with a shaped handle and gilt finish. It is marked with the Grachev maker’s mark, the Russian 84 zolotnik silver standard and St. Petersburg assay marks dated 1892. The spoon also bears matching Russian silver marks.

The firm of Grachev Brothers was one of the important Russian silver workshops of the late Imperial period and supplied high-quality silver and silver-gilt objects for table use, presentation gifts and luxury commissions. This set is a fine example of Russian presentation silver, combining practical tea service form with a personal commemorative inscription.
