Japanese Naval Kyu-Gunto Officer’s Sword, 1914 Pattern, Taisho–Early Showa Period.

A Japanese naval officer’s Kyu-Gunto sword, 1914 pattern. This model is associated with the Taisho and early Showa periods and is described as having been discontinued around the mid-1930s.

The blade is unsigned and appears to be of Murata-type construction. It has a cutting edge of approximately 61 cm and shows age-related staining, scratches and scuffing. Both sides of the blade feature a full-length bo-hi groove. The visible temper line appears to be midare, or irregular, on both sides.

The mounts are in very good condition. The scabbard is covered in fish skin, and the grip is also covered in white fish skin. The back strap is decorated with a silver family mon crest. The sword is complete with the correct white and red naval sword knot.
