Description

Soviet Presentation Fireman’s Axe Awarded to Brandmeister G. Kertling. Leningrad, 1928.

A rare and historically significant Soviet presentation fireman’s axe, awarded to Brandmeister G. Kertling by the Administration of Fire Protection of the city of Leningrad. The wooden haft is mounted with an engraved dedicatory plaque recording the award for long and diligent service, dated 16 November 1928.

The axe is further decorated with an enamel badge marked 1803–1928, commemorating the jubilee of the city’s fire service and giving the piece a strong official and ceremonial character.

The metal axe head is finely shaped and engraved with firefighting motifs, while the overall design combines practical form with commemorative purpose. As a personalized award linked to the Leningrad fire service, this is an unusual survivor of early Soviet institutional history.
