A beautiful tanto by the Shinshinto smith Yasuchika.
Yasuchika worked around 1864 in Chikuzen Province and was a descendant of the Chikuzen Sa school founded by O-Sa at the end of the Kamakura era. The jitetsu is a beautiful tight ko-itame mixed with ko-mokume. The hamon is a notare midare that is nie based with lots of nie in and around the habuchi. It is signed Sa Yasuchika Tsukuru and is not dated. The blade measures 27.1 cm. The motohaba is 2.7 cm. The kasane is 0.7 cm. The habaki is copper that has been wrapped in thick gold foil. It is ubu and in wonderful condition. It is in a beautiful polish that really accentuates the beauty of this blade.
This blade comes with a fantastic set of aikuchi style tanto koshirae that is probably original to the blade. The fuchi and kashira are of ivory as is the kurikata. The menuki are of shishi lions done in shakudo. The black lacquered saya is highlighted by some fantastic gold lacquered peony flowers done in gold. The condition of the koshirae is perfect.
The blade comes with NBTHK Hozon papers attesting to the quality and authenticity of the blade. The blade and the koshirae also come with a custom made presentation box.
