Description

Ottoman Shamshir with Gilded Mounts, Ottoman Empire, 19th Century.

This elegant Ottoman shamshir exemplifies the refined artistry and martial symbolism of the late Ottoman period. Characterized by its gracefully curved profile, the sword embodies the classic form favoured across the empire for both ceremonial display and cavalry use.

The blade is forged from finely patterned Damascus steel, known for its distinctive watered surface. It is richly adorned in gold. One side features a stylized depiction of a Janissary warrior together with an Ottoman coat of arms, imagery connected with the prestige and military traditions of the empire. The opposite side is further embellished with gold Ottoman motifs, including symbolic devices and crescent forms associated with Islamic identity and sovereignty.

The hilt and mounts are crafted from brass and finished with gilding, complementing the opulent decoration of the blade while preserving a balanced and dignified appearance. The fittings display the restrained but refined ornamentation typical of Ottoman arms of this period.

Presented in overall good condition, this shamshir retains strong visual impact and historical character. It is a fine example of 19th-century Ottoman craftsmanship and will be of interest to collectors of Islamic arms, antique swords and decorative edged weapons.
